General MIDI 2 & GS format & sound list
Roland General MIDI-2 GS Sound library – In many Roland digital pianos including the RP401, F140R, RP501, DP603, etc, Roland has a large sound bank of additional instrument tones not specified by name in their owners manual or in other Roland literature. Due to the popularity of Roland digital pianos and also the noticeable realism of these additional sounds in these Roland RP/HP, and LX digital pianos, I have listed all of the additional Roland General MIDI-2 GS sounds below. The sounds can be General MIDI 2 & GS format & sound list
selected and played either directly on the Roland digital pianos using the button controls, or from an iPad connected wirelessly to the piano by way of a special WiFi adapter plugged into the piano. Selecting these sounds from an iPad touch screen using the free Roland “Piano Partner” or “Piano Partner 2” iPad app is the easiest and best way to access and play these additional instrument sounds…and then you can actually see what you are getting in terms of the instrument names. Take a look below and see all the additional acoustic & electric piano sounds as well as orchestral, guitar, brass, woodwinds, synth sounds, etc, available that are beyond the individual  tones mentioned in the owners manuals. There are many digital pianos with lots of instrument sounds, but none as realistic as the ones below based on all my playing experience with them.

Finally, when using recording or notation software on a computer, the song you create within your software can playback the General MIDI GS sounds in your Roland piano when connected by a USB cable. In other words, the Roland piano GM2 GS sound library acts as the orchestra or band for the recorded song on your computer to play through because in some cases the computer software you may be using does not have sounds of its own or the sounds are not very realistic. Either way whether playing them live in the piano or using an external device, it can be quite useful to have this large General MIDI 2 sound library at your fingertips🙂
