Donner DEP-20 portable digital piano in Jan 2022. We do not recommend this piano for a few reasons but primarily because of its unacceptable key action in our opinion. I have played this model for many hours and closely examined it and after extensive research I have done a thorough review of this piano at the link below. *Also, I think it is important to know that Donner is a musical instrument company out of China that is part of the Eastar music products company of China. They produce low priced cabinet and portable digital pianos and keyboards have have been doing so for a number of years. They now have an extensive direct marketing campaign direct to consumer as well as on Amazon and other sites. Donner is trying to come into the US digital piano market in a big way with many different models of digital pianos and keyboards.
Although they look attractive on the outside and have lots of “bells & whistles” on the inside, please keep in mind that at the end of the day it really should be about getting a realistic piano playing experience for key action, piano sound response, and pedaling. You may occasionally use additional instrument sounds, recording, and drum rhythms, but if the piano playing realism cannot keep up then in my opinion you have wasted your money, and that would be for any brand.
Make sure you do it the right way the first time!
Get a digital piano that does not make you get into bad playing habits because you have to compensate for the product’s shortcomings. And always remember that piano key action and its realism and response will either make or break your playing and possibly cause you to not want to play the piano.You can get a virtual “boatload” of great instrument sounds and features on the more well known brands like Casio & Yamaha with their new keyboards for under $200 and their digital pianos for under or near $500. These more well known and experience digital piano and keyboard brands have far more realistic piano key action, more response piano sound, responsive pedaling, durability, the most technologically advance features, and higher resale values.
It is fine for a newer company like Donner to try to make inroads into the digital piano market. But all the marketing and promotion in the world including low prices, “constant factory discounts,” and slick advertising should never take the place of you being able to have a real piano playing experience so that you do not wind up with a piano that you wish were different.
The same thing is true for another low priced digital piano brand named Alesis which can now be found in music stores and on-line. Although this brand also has a number of “bells & whistles” along with a powerful internal speaker system and good connectivity, once again it’s the piano playing authenticity that lacks on this brand and specifically their models called the “Prestige” and Prestige Artist” which is very similar and uses the same portable cabinet.
